Choosing your first task

Your first manual should be an easy win, so you can see the whole thing work end to end before pointing it at anything hard.

Good candidates

• Recurring, and often. A daily or weekly task pays the manual back far faster than something you do twice a year.
• Something you know well. You can explain it without stopping to think.
• Short and simple. Build up to long, multi-step processes once you have seen how it works.
• Computer-based. The easiest to record yourself doing.
• Only one person knows how. The tasks that cause a problem when somebody is off.

Leave these until later

• Processes nobody has run yet. There is nothing to describe - do it once, then document it.
• Heavily judgement-based work where the real answer to every question is "it depends".
