Choosing your first task

Your first manual should be an easy win, so you can see the whole thing work end to end before pointing it at anything hard.

Good candidates

• Recurring, and often. A daily or weekly task pays the manual back far faster than something you do twice a year. Look at where the hours actually go each week.
• Something you know well. You can explain it without stopping to work out what you do next.
• Short and simple. Start with something contained. Build up to long, multi-step processes once you have seen how it works.
• Computer-based. These are the easiest to document well, because you can record yourself doing it.
• Only one person knows how. The tasks that cause a problem when somebody is off are exactly the ones worth locking into the business first.

Leave these until later

• Processes nobody has run yet. There is nothing to describe — do it once, then document it.
• Heavily judgement-based work where the honest answer to every question is "it depends".
